The first Access to Seeds Index, published in February 2016, highlights good practice and aims to spark an evidence-based conversation about how the seed industry can enable smallholder farmers to grow more and better food.
The second Access to Seeds Index, scheduled for publication in late 2018, early 2019, is now underway. Based on the 2016 insights, feedback from companies and other stakeholders as well as expert advice, the methodology will be thoroughly reviewed. One aim is to reduce the number of indicators and the overall complexity, focusing only on those topics that produce actionable insights.
The first Index covered the role of global players and zoomed in on regional companies active in Eastern Africa. The feasibility of expanding the regional scope to Asia and West Africa is currently being explored. Financial support for the second Index is provided by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and AgriCord.
Feedback on Methodology
A first draft of the methodology (scope and indicators of the second Index) will be available in September 2017 for public consultation and feedback. In the fall of 2017, the Expert Review Committee will convene to evaluate the methodology and discuss the results of the public consultations. The data collection for the second Index is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2018.
