‘For a long time, Western seed companies used African soil only to produce crops for other markets. They also had little regard for crops that are popular outside the Western world. But a turnaround has been going on in recent years. ‘All companies are in one way or another involved in helping local African farmers,’ says Ido Verhagen, director of the Access to Seeds Index – which maps out how active seed companies are in developing countries.’
