Newsletter June 2019: Access to Seeds Index 2019 – Synthesis Report 06.12.2019 In 2012, the Access to Seeds Foundation embarked on a mission: to increase transparency around the seed industry and encourage the industry to increase its contribution to the 2030 sustainable development agenda. Two indexes have so far been published, in 2016 and 2019. The Access to Seeds Index 2019 - Synthesis Report reflects on the seed industry’s progress and the remaining challenges over this reporting period, against a changing global backdrop.
Newsletter April 2019: Access to Seeds Index 2019 – Western and Central Africa 04.17.2019 The Access to Seeds Index 2019 - Western and Central Africa is available online. Nigeria-based Value Seeds tops the first Access to Seeds Index for Western and Central Africa, underscoring the potential of homegrown seed companies to reach smallholders in the region. By providing ‘value kits’ and training, the company improves accessibility and affordability of quality seed, particularly for next-generation and women farmers.
Newsletter March 2019: Access to Seeds Index 2019 – Eastern and Southern Africa 03.04.2019 The Access to Seeds Index 2019 - Eastern and Southen Africa is available online. East African Seed tops the 2019 Access to Seeds Index for Eastern and Southern Africa. The company has a growing distribution network in the region. It stands out for its research activities that include local crops, seed production activities involving smallholders and a broad network of extension officers in multiple countries.
Newsletter January 2019: Access to Seeds Index 2019 – Global Seed Companies 01.28.2019 The Access to Seeds Index 2019 - Global Seed Companies is available online. Global seed companies combat climate change and nutrition needs, but reach only 10% of the world’s small farmers. Thailand-based East-West Seed leads global seed industry showing that shaping business models around the needs of small farmers can be profitable.
Newsletter November 2018: Access to Seeds Index 2019 – South and Southeast Asia 11.11.2018 First ever Access to Seeds Index for South and Southeast Asia evaluated 24 leading seed companies in the region on support for Sustainable Development Goals and increased smallholder farmer productivity.
Newsletter July 2018: The Rise of the Seed-producing Cooperative in Western and Central Africa The landscaping study on the rise of the seed-producing cooperative in Western and Central Africa, evaluated over 50 seed-producing cooperatives across 20 countries. Strong performers were identified in four countries: Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. In eight other countries the situation was qualified as ‘promising’.
Newsletter March 2018: Methodology for the 2019 Access to Seeds Index is now available 03.19.2018 The methodology for the 2019 Access to Seeds Index is now available. More than 60 African, Asian and global seed companies will be evaluated on their efforts to support smallholder farmer productivity.
Newsletter December 2017: Next Access to Seeds Index will evaluate more companies, from 25 to 60 12.12.2017 The 2016 Regional Index for Eastern Africa demonstrated the key role regional companies play in reaching smallholder farmers by delivering the industry’s products to the farm gate. The 2018 Index will therefore be expanded to include two additional regions.
Newsletter September 2017: The Methodology for the 2018 Index is open for public consultation 09.11.2017 Stakeholders are invited to provide their feedback on the Methodology for the 2018 Access to Seeds Index so it can be taken in consideration before its finalization. Newsletter May 2017: Second Access to Seeds Index in Progress 05.10.2017 Following a year of farmer roundtables, the development of the second Index has started, which will expand its regional scope to Asia and West Africa. A first draft of the methodology will be available this summer for public consultation and feedback.
Newsletter March 2015: Methodology Report for the Access to Seeds Index Available 03.02.2015 Following an intensive development and review process that started in 2013, the Methodology Report of the Access to Seeds Index 2015 is available. The report describes the methodology for both the Global Index and the Regional Index for Eastern Africa.
