Around 70-80% of the formal seed used, which includes hybrid rice seed, vegetable seed and maize seed, is imported. Hybrid rice seed is imported mostly from China, while hybrid maize is imported mainly from Thailand and India. Vegetable seed is imported from Thailand, China, Japan, South Korea and France.
Of the 13 index countries, Vietnam is the only UPOV member. After joining UPOV, Vietnam experienced a number of benefits, including an increase in breeding activities, increased availability of improved varieties and the introduction of new foreign varieties, all of which have contributed to greater agricultural productivity.
GM maize was commercialized in Vietnam in 2015, and the area under cultivation rose from 35,000 hectares in 2016 to 45,000 hectares in 2017.
Twenty-one index companies report having a presence in Vietnam. Thirteen companies have testing locations, while seed production and breeding is carried out by nine and six countries respectively.
Smallholder farmers produce 100% of the seed for East-West Seed and Known-You Seed in the country.
