Thanks to the introduction by Mr. Nii Quaye-Kumah, the Minister-Councillor and Alternate Permanent Representative of Ghana to FAO in Rome, we organized a fruitful meeting at the Ghanese Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Accra, Ghana, with crops and seed specialists of the Ministry. The meeting was held at the Directorate of Crop Services and hosted by Mr. Richard Twumasi-Ankrah.
A large part of the seed sector in Ghana is informal. Questions were raised on whether and how leading seed companies can interact with the informal sector and how the index could play a role in stimulating that. Possible technical areas for the index and its indicators were discussed: farmer capacity building, extension services, research on local varieties, partnering with local seed companies and strengthening distribution networks.
The outcomes of this meeting will be used to prepare the Round Table sessions on the Access to Seeds Index in fall.
