The 2016 Index showed that six countries in Western and Central Africa had no global seed companies present. This has since decreased to two countries. Furthermore, the number of global companies has increased in most index countries in the region. However, this presence is generally limited to sales. Western and Central Africa is still lagging behind other regions in terms of company presence, and investments in local seed business activities such as breeding, production and processing are low. Estimates indicate that the 13 global seed companies together reach no more than 10% of the world’s 500 million small farmers.
