The 2016 Access to Seeds Index assessed the activities of in total 13 globally operating seed companies in four regions where small scale farming dominates the agricultural landscape: Latin America, Western Africa, Eastern Africa and South and Southeast Asia.
Together, these companies are present in all four Index regions. Most companies are active in Latin America, on average seven per country, followed by South and Southeast Asia with an average of six companies per country.
The country with the widest spread of companies active is Colombia, alongside India, Kenya and Thailand, where 11 out of 13 Global Index companies are active. This is in line with the common practice in the seed industry that companies use a regional approach, using one country in the region as their stepping stone into a specific region.
