Cardo Emerging Markets, based in Nairobi, prepared the preliminary Report for the Regional Access to Seeds Index for Eastern Africa. The report underpins the methodology of this Regional Index and provides baseline information on the East African regional seed sector detailing both regional and country specific scenarios. The information has been sourced from existing literature and interviews with regional and national seed sector players. Twelve countries are included in this report: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Regional Access to Seeds Index will be developed next to the Global Index. The Regional Index puts the spotlight on specific regions, starting with Eastern Africa. It will assess how global, regional and national seed companies on a regional level are extending a helping hand to smallholder farmers. As so, the Regional Index can focus on specific regional needs and requirements. The finalization of the methodology of the Regional Index is scheduled for March 2015.
